Iris

Iris – Voice Interpreter

Live voice translation, offline or with your AI, also across nearby phones.

Coming soon on Google Play

Iris is a hands-free live voice interpreter designed to help two or more people speaking different languages understand one another naturally. The app takes its name from Iris, the messenger of Greek mythology who traveled down the rainbow to bridge words between different worlds.

What it looks like

How it works in 3 steps

  1. Tap to start the "Speak now" indicator and a gentle vibration confirm the microphone is open and ready.
  2. Speak naturally Iris recognizes the spoken language and translates the phrase directly on your phone.
  3. Hear the translation Iris speaks the translation aloud or delivers it to your headset, automatically managing conversation turns.

Who it is for and real-life situations

  • In the car: talk naturally with passengers while driving without touching or looking at the screen, using speakerphone or an earbud.
  • At counters and service desks: communicate comfortably with customers or strangers without having to share personal earbuds.
  • On job sites and meetings: connect up to 5 nearby phones to hear each speaker clearly, even in loud environments.
  • Off-grid travel: on flights, in mountain passes, or inside tunnels, downloaded languages keep translating without internet access.

Main features

  • Hands-free conversation with automatic or manual turn-taking
  • Standard offline translation running directly on-device via Google ML Kit
  • Versatile audio routing: phone speaker, shared stereo earbuds with split left/right channels, or headset plus speakerphone
  • Nearby local conferences: link up to 5 nearby phones without requiring internet access or mobile data
  • Local conversation archive to review, replay sentence by sentence, or export dialogue
  • Accessible design with large touch targets and full TalkBack screen reader support
  • Optional Bring-Your-Own-Key support for compatible cloud AI translation services

Offline operation and privacy in plain words

Iris is designed with privacy at its core. It requires no user account, displays no ads, and never sends conversations to developer servers. Downloaded language packages process translation entirely on your smartphone. If you choose to enable cloud AI translation, you configure your own personal API key; Iris always asks for explicit authorization before sending any text.

What the app needs

  • An Android smartphone
  • Microphone permission (only active during a conversation you explicitly start)
  • Foreground service notification to keep the session running smoothly when the screen turns off
  • Optional: wired headphones or a Bluetooth headset for private or stereo-split listening
  • Optional: camera permission solely to scan QR codes for pairing nearby devices
  • Optional: your own API key if you decide to connect a compatible AI provider

Supported languages

Iris translates on the phone between 59 languages. Listening and voice depend on what your phone offers: some languages need a network, for others the translation only appears on screen.

Notice: machine translations can make mistakes; never rely on them as the sole basis for medical, legal, or emergency decisions. When driving, start Iris before setting off and do not look at or touch the screen while moving. Made in Italy.
